Flying Among the Sunflowers

During the middle of the summer, just north of Spokane, you might stumble upon something unexpected. And you can see it from miles away.

From a distance you will see what seems like an endless sea of yellow, which is in fact, acres and acres of blooming sunflowers.

Invariably you'll see cars pulled over, people taking advantage of the photographic opportunity. Sometimes things look more impressive in pictures, but this isn't one of them. It's hard to replicate having your entire field of vision filled with bright, blooming flowers.

Here is the challenge: The crop moves every year, so you might have to do some exploring to find the sunflowers. The good news is, once you're within a couple of miles, they're easy to spot.

Here is a video I shot with a DJI Phantom 4. I really pushed the limits of flying just over the heads of the sunflowers, it's a miracle I didn't clip the top of one and have a crash. But hey, it made for great video.

And here are some photos of the sunflowers on a previous year:

The last photo was actually a mad dash to capture Northern Lights, which didn't pan out. However, I got lucky with a couple of lightning strikes and some interesting clouds. It just goes to show you that what you set out to do, and what you end up with can be completely different. Just because it's not want you envisioned, it doesn't mean it has no value.
